Yelp has this place as one of the hottest places in downtown… after checking out the menu , a friend and I decided to walk down the street to try it out. Blue Cow Kitchen is at 350 S. Grand, at downtown LA .

The place was cute… it was at the lobby of a office tower, in the courtyard. We sat outside and ordered the “Baked then Fried potatoes”, “Root Chips’n Dip”, the “Vietnamese chicken salad” and the “French (onion short rib) dip”.

The best thing was the Romesco sauce served with the root chips… it had a overtone of roasted red bell peppers and almonds. That mixed with herbs = amazing.

The baked then fried potatoes were exactly what they said they were going to be, but alas, I am one who does not enjoy a confusion of potato preparation. The potato was … just a little boring. My friend said it needed garlic and we made do with the Romesco, which helped.

The Vietnamese chicken salad was great, but not my first choice, as they had run out of the tuna for the Niçoise. The noodles were a tad overcooked, but overall, the mixture of dill and cilantro with the other greens was delicious, contrasted with the tangy and slightly sweet dressing. Oh and the chicken was poached perfectly (I suspect sous-vide).

The sandwich was a disaster. The short-ribs were a little gamey tasting, but if that was not enough, whoever concocted this thing decided to have a play on words and cross a french onion soup with a French dip- which apparently makes it ok to stick a greasy crostini (inspired from the bread in french onion soup) into the sandwich. Let me reiterate, top to bottom, bread, greasy crostini with cheese, gamey short ribs, bread. Why on earth would I want to eat a greasy crostini with something already so rich? And since when has bread been a listed sandwich “filling”?

Overall I think Blue Cow Kitchen was pretty good. I think it deserves a solid B… the salad and Romesco sauce A+, Short rib sandwich, unfortunately much too conceptual: D-.
